Information for Authors

IEEE Technology and Society Magazine invites feature articles (refereed), special articles, and commentaries on topics within the scope of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology, in the broad areas of social implications of electrotechnology, history of electrotechnology, and engineering ethics.

We invite original submissions on the societal impacts, status, future, and significance of technology in society, including topics related to ethics, sustainability, equity, and social values. A goal is to promote improved understanding of the social-technical complexities inherent in technological innovation and implementation. TSM is a space to explore the social-technical relationship.

Before submitting to the magazine, authors are asked to familiarize themselves with the types of articles published in TSM. TSM articles need to include serious consideration of ethics, societal implications, or other research related to policy, public decision-making, etc. Articles that explore only a technology will not be published – even if that technology strikes the authors as being strictly beneficial. Similarly, articles that chart the historical development of a technology will not be put through peer-review unless they engage critically with the social implications or social shaping of that technology. TSM articles often focus on the social implications of emerging technologies, but work exploring social implications related to historical, existing, or speculative technology may also be of interest.

TSM publishes full length refereed feature articles (5000 words max), commentaries (2000-3000 words), which may be refereed or non-refereed, and opinion pieces (1000 words). Letters to the Editor (500 words or less) commenting on previously published articles, IEEE and SSIT affairs, or conferences, are also welcome.

Submissions should be made through the IEEE Author Portal (see “Submitting a Manuscript” below.) Please note that while Manuscript Central accepts pdf submissions, after acceptance an original Word or RTF file will be required.

References and footnotes should appear as separate lists at the end of the paper. For more information, see: IEEE Editorial Style Guide.

Accepted authors will be required to sign an IEEE copyright transfer form before publication of their paper and to obtain any necessary security clearance release. Additional information will accompany the acceptance letter.
