The Earth is the home of humanity, and our long-term welfare depends on protecting it. This requires promoting global human welfare while conserving resources. The IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) is interested in “the complex interaction between technology, science and society,” and its Protecting the Planet – Sustainable Technology Pillar focuses on sustainable technology as part of this effort. To be sustainable, technology must either have life-cycles of decades or longer, or be renewable. The Protecting the Planet – Sustainable Technology Pillar focuses on working with other IEEE and non-IEEE technical societies, and other communities (moral-cultural, political, and business) to identify and promote sustainable technologies that also enable global economic growth.
