A. David Wunsch IEEE Technology and Society Magazine subscribers have long enjoyed a steady stream of thought-provoking book reviews as part of the publication’s offerings.
David Wunsch started providing excellent reviews for IEEE Technology and Society Magazine as early as Fall 1999 when he covered Rocket Boys by Homer H. Hickam, Jr, and Extra Life: Coming of Age in Cyber Space, by David Bennahum [1]. In 2003, Wunsch was appointed Book Review Editor by then Editor-in-Chief Joe Herkert, and ever since, IEEE Technology and Society Magazine readers have had David to thank for the abundant reviews that have appeared in almost every issue, many written by Wunsch and featuring his unique wit and wisdom.
David has developed the reviews section into a much appreciated feature of IEEE Technology and Society Magazine, and we seek to continue that tradition.
“David was not only a superb editor but a staunch advocate for the importance of book reviews in enhancing the overall impact of the magazine,” said Herkert recently.
During his time as Book Review Editor, Wunsch was a Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he is currently a Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He was also a Lecturer in electrical engineering at Tufts University from 2005 to 2009.

In addition to his tremendous contributions to IEEE Technology and Society Magazine as Book Review Editor, Wunsch is also an accomplished photographer (Figures 1 and 2) and has occasionally supplied photo graphs that have illustrated IEEE Technology and Society Magazine articles. In 2015, he published A. David Wunsch American Photographs, 1964–2014 [2]. In the online biographical notes accompanying the book, he relates how his love of photography developed when he was an undergrad uate student at Cornell, and developed further during the seven years that he labored over his Ph.D. thesis at Harvard. “I have never attempted to make photography my profession,” he says, adding, “For me it’s been ‘a fine and private place,’ one which has given me sustenance for about half a century.”
We express our deep gratitude to David for his devotion and contributions to IEEE Technology and Society Magazine over so many years.
While no one will be able to fill David’s shoes, we must try. David has developed the reviews section into a much-appreciated feature of IEEE Technology and Society Magazine, and we seek to continue that tradition. IEEE Technology and Society Magazine now solicits applications for the position of Book
Review Editor.
The position can entail writing some reviews, but also nurturing a stable of book reviewers to provide a total of about 10–20 high-quality reviews per year. The selection of titles to review is often left to the interests of the reviewers. Please send letters of application addressed to Ketra Schmitt, Editor-in-Chief, to
email t.bookman@ieee.org by June 1, 2026.
