Heather A. Love, SSIT Vice President (Conferences) was one of the panelists at the session “Culture and AI: Perils and Potentials” at the IEEE TechSummit on Ethical AI in Budapest, Hungary on 1 October 2026. Heather was joined by Karen Cresci (Scholar and Practitioner of Literary Translation) and Dan Navarro (Songwriter, Singer/Vocal Actor, and Activist), and the panel was chaired by Mojdeh Bahar (Managing Director, IEEE Technical Activities).

The conversation explored the implications and challenges that AI technology raises in contexts such as copyright law (as it applies to creative industries) and literary translation (especially the translation of experimental poetry into regionally specific languages), as well as the ways in which cultural texts—books, films, television—encourage us to think about not only the potential negative consequences but also the alternative possibilities that new AI developments might introduce.
