The IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) is pleased to announce that Dr. Kalyan Sen (IEEE Life Fellow, Fulbright Scholar) has been elected SSIT President-Elect for 2025–2026. He will subsequently serve as SSIT President during 2027–2028.

Dr. Sen resides in the Pittsburgh area, where he has lived with his family since 1990. He is the Co-inventor of the commercially available Sen Transformer. He is the President & Chief Technology Officer of Sen Engineering Solutions, Inc. (www.sentransformer.com) that specializes in SMART power flow controllers, a functional-requirements-based and cost-effective solution for modernizing electric power systems. Dr. Sen’s career spans 33 years across academia and industry. As a key member of the Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) team at the Westinghouse Science & Technology Center, he contributed to concept development, simulation, design, and commissioning of FACTS projects worldwide. For his seminal contributions to power-flow control technology, he was elevated to IEEE Fellow. He earned his BEE degree (1982, first class honors) from Jadavpur University (India), MSEE (1983) from Tuskegee University (USA), PhD (1987) from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (USA), and MBA (2012) from Robert Morris University (USA). He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania and New York.  Dr. Sen has authored or coauthored more than 25 peer-reviewed publications, 8 issued patents, 2 books, and 3 book chapters. His books include Introduction to FACTS Controllers: Theory, Modeling, and Applications (Wiley/IEEE Press, 2009) and Power Flow Control Solutions for a Modern Grid using SMART Power Flow Controllers (Wiley/IEEE Press, 2022).

Dr. Sen has a long and distinguished record of IEEE service. He has been an IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Distinguished Lecturer since 2002, giving over 200 lectures in 20 countries. He currently serves on the SSIT Board of Governors as Education Committee Chair, and on IEEE Region 2 as Professional Activities Chair.

Over the years he has held numerous leadership roles, including re-establishing the Pittsburgh PES and Industrial Applications Society (IAS) Chapters in 2003 and bringing Outstanding Large Chapter Awards in 2004, founding the Pittsburgh Power Electronics Society (PELS) Chapter (recipient of the 2015 Best Chapter Award), and serving as Chair when the IEEE Pittsburgh Section received the Outstanding Large Section Award in 2005.

His recognitions include the IEEE Pittsburgh Section Outstanding Volunteer Service Award (2004 and 2023), PES Outstanding Engineer Award (2004), and service roles such as Editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, Technical Program Chair of the 2008 PES General Meeting, and leadership positions across IEEE Regions 1–7 in PELS.  Beyond IEEE, he is a Boy Scouts of America leader and a Distinguished Toastmaster and previously served as District Governor of District 13 of Toastmasters International, leading the district to a top-10 global ranking in 2007–2008.

The IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) is one of 39 technical societies of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). SSIT focuses on the relationship between technology and society and facilitates understanding of the complex interaction between technology, science, and society, including impacts on individuals and society in general, ethics, professional and social responsibility in the practice of engineering, science, and technology, and open discussion of the resulting issues. SSIT’s publications, conferences, social media groups, and local chapter events provide opportunities to engage, discuss and influence the challenges and benefits that technology brings to our world.
