The Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) seeks applications and nominations for the position of Editor-in-Chief (EIC) or Co-Editors-in-Chief (Co-EICs) of the IEEE Transactions on Technology and Society (TTS) for a three-year term (once renewable) beginning 1 January 2026. TTS has successfully satisfied a Periodicals Review and Advisory Committee (PRAC) review at IEEE and is under consideration at Clarivate for an impact factor status.
This quarterly periodical is a rich tapestry of diverse topics, making it an intellectually stimulating platform for those interested in various aspects of technology and society. These topics span from information and communication technology to the social implications of emerging technologies and innovations, from science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) education to health and safety, life sciences, energy, economic issues, and environmental implications. TTS also delves into issues surrounding professional practice and responsibility, law and regulation, public policy and organizational policy, technology and the future of work, philosophy of technology, bioengineering, and sustainability.
The TTS is a platform that values and promotes diversity of expertise, communicating to a wide array of readers from multiple disciplines involved in the societal implications of technology. It is truly interdisciplinary, with joint perspectives from engineers, scientists, technologists, ethicists, informaticians, public policy experts, lawyers, health practitioners, economists, science and technology studies experts, psychologists, political scientists, sociologists, and anthropologists. Publications in TTS are technical, in-depth papers of original work targeted at technically knowledgeable readers who are not necessarily specialists in the subjects being treated but have an interdisciplinary background in one or more fields of interest.
For IEEE TTS, the priority is high-quality research and empirical studies, applications and technological issues, theoretical arguments supported by evidence or proof, and conceptual framework development. Its commitment to publish original works such as technology impact assessment, industry briefs, government policy, and standards, among others, makes TTS an ideal platform for those seeking to contribute to technology and society.
The Editor-in-Chief has ultimate responsibility for maintaining the quantity and quality of the editorial content of the Transactions. IEEE employs and provides the Editor-in-Chief with a professional managing editor who works with and assists the Editor-in-Chief/Co-Editors-in-Chief on editorial matters and coordinates the production of the Transactions. Senior editors, associate editors, and an administrator provide additional volunteer assistance. The current newly announced board profiles are here [1].
The position of Editor-in-Chief is a voluntary, non-salaried position. To the extent possible, institutional support for the Editor-in-Chief/Co-Editors-in-Chief’s expenses is sought from the individual’s employer or academic institution. If necessary, a modest expense budget is available to supplement such support. The Editor-in-Chief is expected to participate in at least two meetings of the SSIT’s board of governors each year, attend ISTAS conferences when possible, and attend the annual IEEE Panel of Editors Conference. Some financial support for this travel may be available.
Applicants must submit an application consisting of the following items.
- A cover letter not to exceed 500 words.
- A brief IEEE-style biography of up to 200 words.
- A list of four to eight fields of interest, as identified above, within the scope of IEEE TTS in which the candidate could confidently handle submissions.
- Details regarding academic/ industry/ government/ other credentials, including affiliation and current position. An institutional website is desirable.
- Evidence of any publication in IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology outlets, e.g., IEEE TTS or IEEE Technology and Society Magazine (IEEE TSM). Additionally, experience in and details of particular sections or special issues that have been organized related to IEEE SSIT’s flagship conference, the IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS), or other international conferences in recognized academic communities is desirable.
- Evidence and details of previous or current roles on the editorial boards of Scopus / Web of Science journal publications.
- Prior experience as a reviewer at IEEE TTS, IEEE TSM, or any other IEEE interdisciplinary outlet should be identified.
Please attach this letter in PDF format to your email transmittal. If you are among the final candidates, SSIT may request additional information, such as a detailed curriculum vitae.
